Vocational Education and Training at KHS

As part of your HSC, you are able to study courses that not only contribute towards your HSC and ATAR, but also give you an industry recognised qualification when you complete that course.

These courses are called Vocational Education & Training (VET) courses and can be studied at school or through an external training provider (such as TAFE).

These vocational courses form part of the Australian Qualifications Framework. This is the national standard of training and means that a qualification you receive here, is recognised anywhere in Australia. The courses are 'competency-based' - this means that you move through the course and achieve the relevant qualification by demonstrating that you have the knowledge and can perform the skills required for that qualification.

There are a number of courses that can be delivered by school or TAFE that are known as Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) courses or Board Developed Courses (BDC). As well as counting towards your HSC, they can count towards your ATAR (if you choose to sit the optional HSC exam) and also give you an industry recognised qualification (usually at Certificate II or Certificate III level).

The framework courses delivered at Kirrawee High School are:

  • Business Services

  • Construction Pathways

  • Entertainment

  • Hospitality

These courses involve undertaking a compulsory work placement (35 hours per year) in the relevant industry and are delivered at school.

Externally Delivered VET Courses (EVET)

There are also a large range of Externally delivered VET courses. These are delivered by TAFE, AIE, Whitehouse School of Fashion Design and other Private Training Providers. Some of these courses include:

- Animal Studies

- Automotive
- Beauty
- Community Services

- Early Childhood Education

- Electrotechnology

- Fashion
- Hairdressing
- Maritime Operations

- Screen & Media
- Music Industry
- Human Services - Nursing Assistant
- Plumbing
- Tourism & Travel
.... and many more ........

The great thing about these courses is that not only do they contribute towards your HSC (and some will count towards your ATAR), but you will also gain a nationally recognised industry qualification. This means that if you choose to do further training when you leave school, and continue your study in that same area, you will be deemed to have completed part of that TAFE course already.

Employers also see a qualification as being very valuable as it develops a range of important future focused skills such as communication, problem solving, creativity and team work.

Not all EVET courses that are offered run. Minimum numbers of applicants are required to make a course viable.

EVET courses are provided FEE-FREE to all students enrolled at NSW Department of Education schools.

There is a separate application process for EVET courses.

To apply for an EVET course follow these steps:

1. Download a copy of the Expression of Interest form (blue tab)

2. Look at the list of EVET courses - consider the campus (venue) and pattern of study (e.g. 2 units x 2 yrs)

3. Complete all information, including a USI and parent/carer signatures. The school will add your NESA number.

4. Return to Ms Thomson (Careers Office) either in person.

Applications will close on 26 August

Work placement

Work placement is a key feature of most VET courses and is mandatory. Students are required to complete a set number of work placement hours to successfully complete their course. This is a NESA requirement.

During a work placement, students use knowledge and skills gained in the classroom in a real work setting. This develops attitudes and behaviours appropriate for the industry while the participants progress towards achieving industry competencies. Additionally, it is often used by employers to identify students they would like to employ.

School Based Traineeships and Apprenticeships

School based apprenticeship or traineeships combine school, training and paid work to give students:

  • an industry recognised national qualification

  • experience in the career they want and

  • credit towards the HSC.

Students can begin an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship in Year 10, 11 and 12 and some can contribute towards their ATAR.

More information can be found at School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

Unique Student Identifier (USI)

Any student undertaking nationally recognised training, including VET and EVET courses offered at or through the school are required to obtain a USI. This is required to receive your qualification or statement of attainment.

The USI will give you access to an online record of your nationally recognised training in the form of a USI Transcript. This can be used when applying for a job, seeking a credit transfer or demonstrating pre-requisites when undertaking further training.

You will need to provide identification to create a USI.

The following are acceptable forms of ID to create a USI. You will need at least one of the identity documents listed below:

  • Australian Passport

  • Non-Australian Passport (with Australian Visa)

  • Australian Birth Certificate

  • Australian Driver's Licence

  • Medicare Card
